Blog Post #3

Creating my very own myth website was an experience I never knew I needed/wanted. These past few weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions, ideas, feelings, swirling around in my mind until I figured out something I liked. This project gave me the opportunity to use my creative thinking skills to create a fully-developed myth, and while this experience definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone a bit, I am excited to use these new found skills in my own future classes.
The experience of working on a website has improved my technical skills, advancing my knowledge in an increasingly digital classroom environment. Research can help deepen one’s understanding of diverse cultures and historical contexts, which is crucial for fostering a global perspective in the classroom. Partaking in a research process, aimed at broadening one’s understanding of  different myths, can help teach students the importance of storytelling, symbolism, and moral lessons found in various traditions.
Creating content for a myth website has also refined my communication skills, as I will need to present complex ideas in an engaging and accessible way for my students. Producing content that is interesting and comprehensible is key to student engagement. Overall, this project aided in broadening my resources that will help to engage future students, and maybe even other faculty members.

  1. Hello Bryana, myths are definitely sites of potential interest for students, as they are sources of inspiration for many popular pieces of media. But shifting a student's interest from current literature to past additions is difficult—as myths are both distanced socially and linguistically from modern culture, some by hundreds to thousands of years. Although, with this recent assignment, it has become easier to recognize myths in everyday life. I'm glad that this project gave you the opportunity to use some more creative thinking skills; flexing these types of skills can reveal different methods to catch an audience’s attention, as unique presentations catch more eyes than traditional depictions. Plus it is a chance to break away from the Western canon, a canon that heavily focuses on Greek and Roman mythology above all else. Which is unfortunate, as there are many myths worth mentioning from cultures that are not privileged within American culture and media.

  2. Hi Bryana,
I was also pushed out of my comfort zone with this project. I like to write stories, but I never share them so putting them out on a website was a little scary. I know only a few people will see it but it is still intimidating to know that someone will be reading and evaluating my story. I also really enjoyed what you had to say about using this assignment in a classroom setting. I’m currently student teaching at a middle school that mainly uses Chromebooks for classwork and homework. I think doing an assignment like this would be fun and easy for the kids, but also allow them to learn some new skills. They are still getting the hang of researching so this assignment would be perfect for them to practice. It would also be an opportunity for them, like you said, to practice communicating with their writing. They would need to write in a way that is accessible to everyone while also conveying their ideas accurately.
